Poppe + Potthoff Präzisionsstahlrohre
100 % Safe. Accurate. Reliable

Bengt-Henning Maas, CEO of the tubing factory, presented the procedure in the project "tube production 4.0" at the Hanover Fair.

Hannover Messe 2016

At this year's Hanover Fair, which took place from April 25 to 29, the region of East Westphalia-Lippe (OWL) presented itself with a joint stand. On this platform, over 30 companies, research institutions and industry-related organizations showcased the performance of the top cluster "It's OWL" as well as concrete solutions for industry 4.0.

Embedded into the presentation framework of the top cluster, Poppe + Potthoff Präzisionsstahlrohre GmbH also presented first results on its way to a "Smart Factory". Bengt-Henning Maas (CEO) familiarized the interested listeners with the rationale and the strategy behind the project "tube production 4.0" and explained how and why the draw bench is now being equipped with the latest sensor technology. With a new machine, precision steel tubes are cut precisely and very efficiently at Poppe + Potthoff.

Cutting without chips in the process

In June, a new major machine went into serial operation at Poppe + Potthoff Präzisionsstahlrohre GmbH. The fully automatic sawing, de-burring and chamfering unit allows for tube sawing with most precise perpendicular cuts and subsequent end finishing according to customer requirements.

This way, inner and outer chamfers with specific angles and defined chamfer depths at both tube ends are made possible. And despite the large number of consecutive process steps being applied to each tube passing the new unit, its sophisticated machine concept still ensures minimal cycle times. To Poppe + Potthoff, the process needs to be absolutely free of chips to enable an inner and outer surface quality without the slightest damage due to chips or chip impressions. Together with the equipment manufacturer much attention was accordingly paid during the design and implementation of the machine to various innovations and technical tricks that reduce the occurrence and spreading of chips in the process to a minimum.

As P+P Präzisionsstahlrohre GmbH has implemented an energy management system certified in accordance with ISO 50001 in December 2015, energy efficiency and the continuous improvement of the company’s energy performance are very much in focus.

During the system design phase a systematic life cycle cost analysis for all relevant energy consumers within the new large-scale machine was used to keep future energy needs as low as possible by selecting low-consumption components.

Last but not least the control system is state of the art and provides all relevant process parameters for further monitoring and data analysis. Thus, the new unit will immediately be integrated into the connected tube production as part of P+P Präzisionsstahlrohre GmbH’s smart factory strategy.

Precision and diligence go hand in hand – Profiles by Poppe + Potthoff Präzisionsstahlrohre GmbH

Convincing with precision

Not only innovative spirit, but also a high degree of solidity and continuity characterize Poppe + Potthoff Präzisionsstahlrohre GmbH. Poppe + Potthoff cares for long-standing and loyal partnerships with its customers which are a benefit for both sides.

A good example is a tubular steel profile with a round external diameter and a square profile in the internal diameter. Although this profile makes an inconspicuous impression, it is quite a challenge for the production.

The different geometric shapes of the outer and inner diameter result in an irregular pipe wall. For the formation of the inner square, special attention must be paid to this variance to achieve the demanded shaping.

Furthermore, this profile is made of a special material. It is characterized not only by high demands regarding tolerances and concentricity; much attention is also given to the radii of the interior angles.

"This profile requires the highest degree of precision and diligence in order to deliver a premium product to the customer," says Frank Schneidewind, Process Quality Manager at Poppe + Potthoff Präzisionsstahlrohre GmbH. “We are very pleased that this special profile is being manufactured in series at Poppe + Potthoff since many years and that our customer regards us as a strong and reliable partner.”

We wish all our customers a wonderful summer.

Taking a break from the heat

When it’s getting really hot outside, we turn down the furnace for a short time. In early August we will be performing maintenance and repairs on our systems. The furnace is one of the neuralgic points in our production and requires periodic inspection for a trouble-free operation and consistent quality. In addition to the preventive maintenance, the entire transport rollers of furnace III will be renewed this year – this way we ensure that your tube is continuously conveyed smoothly with us.

The production at Poppe + Potthoff Präzisionsstahlrohre GmbH is therefore to be suspended for two weeks (as every year). This scheme applies to our production, quality and shipping department. Therefore neither collections nor deliveries will be possible from August 1 to 12, 2016. To guarantee supply to our customers we have yet accepted no dates for this period in advance. From August 15 on, we well again be fully operational and at your service as usual.
