100 % Safe. Accurate. Reliable

Poppe + Potthoff involved in the leading edge technology cluster it‘s OWL

The most recent highlight among Poppe + Potthoff Präzisionsstahlrohre GmbH’s development projects is the industry transfer project titled itsOWL-TT-InveRse - “Mechatronic revamp of a drawing machine for precision steel tubes”. The aim of the cooperation project is getting into shape for the new age of cyber-physical systems and internet of things; how to transform an old-school drawing machine into a 21st-century production machine.

The project idea was developed together with experts for mechatronics, automation and control technology of the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology (IPT) and the Heinz Nixdorf Institute at Paderborn University and was submitted and granted as Industry Transfer Project of the leading-edge technology it’s OWL – “Intelligent technical systems Eastern Westphalia-Lippe.” In the coming months the Project Team, consisting of process development and maintenance employees of P+P Präzisionsstahlrohre GmbH and scientific staff of the Fraunhofer IPT, will initially work on preparing a concept for the necessary measuring and sensor technology to record and generate the relevant process and quality parameters of the considered tube drawing system and will then implement the necessary sensors. The goal is, at the end of the project, to visualize and evaluate the most important data about system states and process settings in system control as well as decentrally on each network-capable PC or mobile device at P+P to track and be able to advice possibly necessary counter measures. Thus a prompt, quasi-online reaction to undesired system states such as malfunctions and downtimes, will be possible and e.g. an initiating wear and tear remedied by preventive maintenance.

Schematic flow chart of the project phase focuses.

The project InveRse has reference character and is to be rolled out to the remaining production systems at P+P Präzisionsstahlrohre with regard to the procedure when making systems fit which are mechanically faultless but not yet 100% up-to-date from the sensor and control technology, for the necessary transition to the era of cyber physical systems.

Company Holidays – 27.07.2015 to 07.08.2015

In the coming days, the production operations at Poppe + Potthoff Präzisionsstahlrohre will be suspended as every year. We therefore request our customers to coordinate their requirements once again to ensure supply during this period.

The shutdown will be used to conduct the maintenance measures on our systems and, in particular, on the furnace lines. The annealing shop is one of the neuralgic points in production and must be serviced regularly for trouble-free operation and uniform quality. After switching off the furnaces it takes about one week until the temperature of the approx. 40 m long system has dropped from more than 900 °C to maintenance-friendly temperatures and the actual work can be started. In addition to the burner technology, internal transport rollers, the cooling line and the lining are examined precisely. After maintenance and possible repair, “heating up” can be started again which, in turn, takes almost 1 week until the necessary annealing temperatures are reached, as well as a controlled furnace atmosphere set up.

The company holidays have therefore been chosen so that they coincide with the maintenance work which would not allow us to continue with our production anyhow. Abandoning this time out and the related maintenance would mean a clearly longer production impediment in the event of damage.

New Internal Multi-tooth Profile for Automotive Applications.

Poppe + Potthoff Präzisionsstahlrohre manufactures new profiles with particularly high customer-specific requirements. The new internal multi-tooth profile has been developed for the automobile technology and can be used as replacement for broached profiles. Admittedly, the dimensional accuracy of a broached profile cannot be reached but the cost-benefit ratio is excellent. The product met the requirements set by the customer and is currently being tested for capability in the service life and misuse test.

Change in Sales Structure - Foreign Markets

Effective as per 01.07.2015 we have rearranged the tasks in the foreign markets. The former sectoral responsibility was replaced by a task-oriented working mode.

Poppe + Potthoff Präzisionsstahlrohre GmbH is already known as the manufacturer for tight tolerances, special mechanical requirements or complex profile shapes. Nonetheless, we still see major potential here which can be further expanded in collaboration with the customer. We are working increasingly at this orientation and are attuning ourselves to this in particular.

Consequently, advising and supporting our customers during the enquiry stage has special significance with this orientation. To guarantee this in the best possible way, Mr. Hokamp will primarily take over the sector of quotations transnationally in future.
